Xiaomi notebook Pro - the best Chinese notebook for testing
Exclusive high-end machine for a mid-range price.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro - Introduction
I never liked classical tests. They are sterile and do not say anything about how to use that device in real life. We get a lot of numbers from the test results, weighing the programs in a thousand and one article.
The problem is, if you want to write a real test, you will need to use the hardware for weeks, because it takes time to get the bugs and make the opinion sound. Long ago when I wrote classic tests I had never had time because the stuff I had to test had to be given to the next newspaper. Now, however, to decide what I want to write when I order test subjects for myself, this is completely different.
Xiaomi Notebook Pro has been in use for more than a month now. But not as a second machine, because I ordered this for myself, so when I changed my old notebook. My sixth week, I write the articles, watch the movies. I'm in the car in the car seat and I'm in my backpack when I'm going to the motorcycle somewhere. So we're inseparable.
In any case, I wanted to write a few sentences about why I ordered a notebook from China. The first reason is simple, Xiaomi fan. I've ordered a lot of them from them and so far I did not have to miss anything. Everything works, everything does its job as it is written. It's true, these mules are a bit more like I'm getting one from an emerging brand, but in return they are endlessly reliable and quality.
For the second reason, we have to go a little further in time. I've been working with IT for two decades, testing and writing articles, and during this time there have been loads of portable computers. I've been testing for some time now, just installing them or servicing some of them, and of course I've got a lot of things I bought for myself. When he started to shout in my mind at the beginning of last year that a new machine should have decided that it was enough from the middleware. After a long time, I want a top-class machine again, a true business notebook. Year I bought a gamer not from ASUS, I burned it badly, so I wanted a quality, powerful and exterior-looking machine and not a gamer not far from performance.
Processor should be i7, but minimum i5. The memory is minimum 8 GB and the mass storage is SSD, at least 120, but rather 256 GB. And the battery life should be long!
I looked at the domestic supply and came to the conclusion that the category I wanted started somewhere in the height of 350 thousand forints. I knew it would not be cheap, but I did not want to make a lot of money on a new machine, so the project went to the parking lot. Until last autumn, when Xiaomi introduced the new 15,6 colos, the Notebook Pro. Then I knew that this machine would be what I would buy.
I've been waiting for a few months, collecting the money. Meanwhile spring came. During the past few months I've been leaked all the pros and cons arguments against and against the notebook buying from China. When the machine was in the basket, they went through my mind once more. The minimum 100 savings of HUF 1,000 compared to domestic prices, the warranty service, the quality of Xiaomi products so far. In the end I came across as every single occasion that there are more positive and I need such a machine. I clicked on the button, I used Pay-Pal to pay, I'm sure that if I get mixed up during transport, I'm sure I'll get my money back.
There was a little more than three weeks before delivery, but since I really came to live with my Xiaomi notebook. Essentially, I'm always with you because there's anywhere I can have 10-15 minutes to write or to run an article or to make something on a website that is being prepared.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro - Packaging and exterior
The machine came in a large cardboard, with the use of foam spacers, there was a regular, "fancy" box. It's a catscake, because there is no ornament there. There is a photo of the machine on the white cover, there are Chinese punctuation pages and the Xiaomi logo, at the bottom there is only a sticker that probably contains the machine's details, but since Chinese is the name of the machine and the weight of the notebook can be interpreted to me.
So the packaging is quite puritanical, but really, when I think about doing business-class machines, it's not like being a clown in the box, it's rather a restraint.
Lifting the roof will look at the plane. There is an envelope made of cardboard, but we do not find anything relevant here, except for quick commissioning, of course Chinese. The pictures show where to turn on, where to charge the charger and the like. Below the envelope we find the bulk of the accessories. Okay, that was a joke, only the charger is here.
As you can see in this attraction, the machine will be the point. Unfortunately, the times have passed away when manufacturers have provided gifts for such a gamer or business machine, such as a bag, a backpack or the like.
But do not be afraid of this, since the point here is still the notebook! I would try to describe how it felt to be in the first place, but it is difficult to go. Unfortunately I am far from being able to create a novelist's sensitivity, but I'm doing a timid attempt.
When I pulled out of the box, my first thought was that it was amazingly slim and surprisingly heavy compared to its size. I was surprised by it, but I weighed it, really it was just a penny of a pound, so we simply slammed our eyes, we would not expect from such a slim machine to such a mass.
The metal housing of the machine is cool in the palm of my hand. It's odd that I always feel cool for something, even when I leave it after work. The touch of the house is like this, and it's all about giving a feeling of reliability. The lines, the edges, are like somebody with a knife with a large metal clasp. The edges are not sharp.
The outside is completely inconvenient if I remove the stickers from the bottom, only a modest Mi logo would tell the manufacturer. There is nothing on the cover, and below there are only a large and two smaller grids. The first is cooling, the latter comes with the sound of the loudspeakers from the house. On one side, there are two USB Type-C and one card reader, on the other there are two conventional USB ports, one HDMI output and one headphone output.
The machine's workmanship is amazingly good. The joints are infinitely accurate, the house is not inclined in spite of its thinness, and is surprisingly rigid. Based on the first impressions, there will not be a problem here!
Opening the lid then the miracle continues. The lid with the display is very thin, but its stability does not feel, twist, bend can not really be. Since the bottom of the machine must be removed for mounting, there are no joining joints on the keyboard side, a large metal surface. The size of the tapipad is quite good, and even a bit big. The keypad is what you can expect in this category, the buttons have a strong pressure point and can be used to make the typing very comfortable. Of course, they also need to have a large size, so we get a key size corresponding to a desktop keyboard. Of course there is a price, there is no numeric keypad on the machine, but this is usually the case for notebooks of similar size.
The display on this machine is not matte but bright, or rather a thin glass sheet is found in front of the panel. The visible frame is extremely thin, but this is not, of course, the real frame, it turns out that a non-thick black strip will frame the visible image.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro gives us the cool feeling we want when we put that much money on something before switching on. The little emotional feedback, the confirmation that we did not give up our nonsense was enough. Here we get it, so there's no mistake!
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro - The machine inside
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro is currently available with two different processors. These are Intel Core i5-8250U, which is quad-core, and clock speed varies between 1,6 and 3,4 GHz, as well as Intel Core i7-8550U, which is also quad-core and clocked between 1,8 and 4,0 GHz. Both processors are Intel 8. generation solution that is built on Kaby Lake core and is made of 14 nanometer strip width.
You need to know about these processors that both of them are Intel's ultra-economical solutions. This means that you can expect a long battery life, in return for lower performance. There was an opinion that these outdated processors should not buy such a machine, but that's the way it is stupid. It's just that the upper limit of consumption is heavily restricted so the clock can not be lifted up to the sky. For the i7 processor working in this test, 4 GHz is also available, which is a physical core 4 and can execute eight executions at the same time with two threads per core.
The speed of the machine is further increased by the fact that it is not a conventional hard drive, but a solid-state SSD mounted on a PCI Express Express 256 GB capacity in M.2 format. Of course this is not uncommon because of the lack of space, it would be difficult for you to have a conventional SSD in this slim case, and it would also slow down the performance of the machine, let alone talk about how harmful it would be for operating time. What's good is that we can find a blank PCI Express bus on the back of the back cover, so if the mass storage is not enough, we can expand it or use it in extreme conditions to use RAID in the machine or to further increase data security rates or data rates.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro line now consists of three machines. The cheapest one is the version with the i5 processor, 8 GB memory and 256 GB. There is only a difference between the middle and the most expensive machine. The cheaper 8, the more expensive 16 GB is carrying on its motherboard. You read it well, memory is on the motherboard. Because of lack of space, these thin machines no longer fit into a conventional memory module or the module receiving rail. This is a problem because of the later expansion of the machine, so if you think that 8 GB memory will be low, you should take the 16 GB first, because no later expansion is possible.
What's still in the machines is the dedicated video card, or rather GPU. This comes from NVIDIA's workshop, a GeForce MX150 type. There are two versions of GeForce MX150. One of them is the higher speed and the other puts forward a longer run time. This ability naturally appears in the clock, as the two tiles are the same. I do not know whether or not the good or bad news is that Xiaomi has chosen longer service life. This means that the chip 1D12 runs on the 1469 MHz and 1532 MHz boost clocks instead of the faster version, instead of 1252 and 1341 MHz, at least according to GPU-Z. I honestly say that I have this advantage because I use the machine in most cases as a carrier rather than an outlet. In addition to the NVIDIA GPU, we find 2 GB GDDR5 memory, with clock speed, again only according to GPU-Z, 1253 MHz.
In addition to the "fast" NVIDIA chip, Intel's integrated solution also includes Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU for the Kaby Lake CPU. Its performance is far more modest, with virtually one quarter or one fifth of its performance in NVIDIA MX150. Of course, its consumption is much smaller, so for applications where the power of NVIDIA does not have to be, the integrated GPU gives the image.
Let's stay a little longer with iron! As I mentioned several times, the machine is extremely thin. This obviously is advantageous in terms of portability and obviously disadvantageous in all other respects. As you can read above, for example, you can not increase the amount of memory, but even though you can not replace a processor, and the VGA chip is eternal unless you are looking for someone to remove, recycle and replenish.
Which is still problematic due to the small size of the cooling system. At least that's what I thought. Then it turned out that this was very cleverly resolved at Xiaomi. The system is not cooled by two fans, but due to the doubled cooling capacity, I have not been able to heat up the house.
After last year's presentation, I read in many places that this dual cooling problem would be problematic because even small machines with simple solutions are loud when intense cooling starts. Double will obviously double noise. Well, now I have not been able to do so much to make the cooling at maximum speed or simply not loud when it really starts. Of course, no noise is heard in terms of soundless operation, but it's not nearly as disturbing as it is far from the unbearable, like Makó Jerusalem.
If you are already in the iron, you will be able to pack some test results at the end of this chapter.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro Tests
I thought that, although it's a business-purpose machine, I still look at 3D Mark to run the games in a game. I've run the tests available in the free version and the result was in my expectation. The MX150 is not a machine, but it performs honestly, so if we are not able to run the latest games with full graphic detail, we can achieve a whole set of FPSs with some softness.
This is the program that this machine needs. In essence, it tests the machine in all areas for which it is intended, and even has a photo and video editing function. The scores are nice too, of course not in comparison with a bull's desktop. My own experience shows that hardware cope with larger Excel tables as well as Photoshop challenges, in fact, I even cut smaller videos at times, and although I'm not aloof from speed, performance is quite right. You can find PCMark results here: Xiaomi Mi Notebook Test - PCMark Results
Crystal Disk Mark
This program was only put in here for really cubes. The Samsung SSD works well, so it was clear that this is not the component that will slow down the machine at higher loads.
The program we measured with 10 had almost nothing changed. However, in the field of graphic rendering, we are still a perfect partner if we are looking for performance on our machine.
Based on the measurements I have to say that no surprises were caused by the machine. Since I've been working on it for a few weeks, I expected these results. They will be sure to find a little bit of fun, but once again, this is a business-class machine, not a gamer machine that is ultimately a performance. To do this we need to measure the results that I think in today's field have been very fair.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro - summary
We talked about the outside, we talked about the inside, it's time to tell you a little bit about the machine, that is, how to live with it!
If you expect me to write bad, you must be frustrated. Never, but never the last 20 in a few years since I used portable computers I did not have such a good notebook, including ASUS ROG notit, which is mentioned in the article horrific money, which is about a month after the warranty expires. I do not say it was a bull in comparison to the age of the machines, but in exchange for it was difficult as mud, it was warm like a deadly firefly and was loud like a dirty vacuum cleaner. True, the edge of the display was illuminated here and there, and there was a text message bar in which the text was burned in two months. Well, he did not come in.
What's more, that's the corporate DELL note I've changed for this Xiaomira now. There was a second or perhaps third generation i7 that worked with 4 GB memory, later with an 120 GB SSD. I did not take care of the battery, so it was ruined, but other things worked fine for years. Needless to say, it was not intended for home use, it was a business category machine. Maybe it was because I wanted this category before.
Business machines are strong, but they are not endlessly sharpened. The use of materials is of first class but not seductive as a gamer machine. Notebooks for home use are by no means referred to as being a completely different world with lots of plastic, loud cooling and other weaknesses.
So the point, to see it fall in love was a moment, but the purchase went out for a while. Now, after more than a month of use, I dare to say that every dime is understood. Of course, I hope it will not be broken, but fortunately there is a service where you can fix most things, and if it is a bug for a motherboard, especially after a warranty period, it will all be that I bought from home or from China, the repair would not be so.
Using the machine is a real pleasure. Not only because it's good to work on it, but also because when I get out of a bag from a strange place, the air stops, and everyone wonders what the beauty I'm going to be. When I tell you that, it's just a "Chinese" notebook, then you really have a surprise. Okay, Xiaomi is not an average Chinese manufacturer, but still, I often realize that mentioning a name does not mean anything, they do not know what I'm talking about.
This article has often been a matter of battery life. Well, when I'm working with the machine - this is a daily 6-8 clock, I have to charge one charger a day. The charging itself is approx. one and a half hours, so normal work, Photoshop, sometimes I can use a 5-6 watch with a little video cut. I think this is a pretty normal operating time, which I am perfectly satisfied with. This is ultimately a portable machine, here is one of the most important aspects not to be connected to the power outlet.
The keyboard needs to be used. Not because it's bad, but because the numeric keypad is missing on the one hand and there is no English assignment on the other hand, only English (American). I do not have to get used to it, I've been using an English keyboard for years, I do not have to look for accented letters. What matters is a bit of standardization that the keyboard is not 101, so the long letter can be drawn with the Alt Gr + j keys. For me about. the third letter was already automatic, but if you're thinking of this, calculate it! Of course, you can also dictate the keys, but because of the beautiful backlight I would feel it a sin.
I've been writing this article several times to use the machine. In addition to the normal Word and Excel programs, I work with Photoshop, Adobe Media Encoder every day, and hit videos with Hit Film. Naturally, I have used a variety of browsers, different text editors, such as notepad ++, for web works. It can be said that I expect much more from the average office job than the machine and so far I have no complaints about it.
Finally, the most important question is whether I would recommend this machine to others? I do not think I have to explain exactly why, but yes, I would recommend it. Of course, this keyboard thing, that is, that there are no buttons with Hungarian accented characters, can cause problems for some, so it has to be calculated.
However, if you do not want to spend a lot, and instead of choosing a business machine for a home automobile, this machine will be yours. Indeed, for similar category and equipped notebooks at home, you need to pay more than $ 100 a thousand forints, which is not a bit of money. I would add that if I could buy the machine in a domestic trade (from a known wholesaler), I would have bought it at an identical price instead of ASUS or MSI. So the 100 thousand price advantage is just a foam on the cake.
I think it's a good decision for me to take the vosom along with Xiaomi, and I have not regretted it for a minute, and even my close acquaintances are encouraged to try out how to use a premium notebook to enter Xiaomi's world!
The price of the machine in a Chinese warehouse when writing this article is 910 dollar, which is very good, so we could only buy it for a great deal of luck if we caught up with a coupon action. Now without this coupon, that's all. If you would like to do so, please be aware that you will choose Priority Line - EU Express delivery, which is a bit more expensive, but the distributor will pay us the VAT and the customs when we come to the EU, it does not load.
